Kind reveals added sugars in products

US-based natural foods company Kind Healthy Snacks has disclosed the added sugar content of its 60 plus snack portfolio in a move to make its product labeling transparent.

The company has published the added sugar information on its newly launched webpage KIND Promises.

Besides, the website outlines health and nutrition principles followed by the company in the product development.

The move comes two years ahead of the deadline set by the the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to reveal the added sugar content in their products.

Kind founder and CEO Daniel Lubetzky said: “Our approach at KIND is to provide consumers with straightforward information about what they’re putting into their bodies, so for us, publishing the added sugar content in our snacks is a natural next step in our ongoing commitment to transparency.”

The company highlighted the steps taken over the past several years to use as little sugar as possible in its snacks without compromising taste or adding artificial sweeteners or sugar alcohols.

Among those steps, Kind announced last year to reduce the sugar in seven of its Fruit & Nut bars to contain between 14 and 56% less added sugar compared to prior recipes.

After the roll out of the reformulated bars next year, all KIND snacks are expected to have approximately ½ to 2 ½ teaspoons of added sugar per serving.

It said that newly launched Pressed by KIND bars contain no added sugar and provide two full servings of fruit.

Kind CDN and health and wellness specialist Stephanie Perruzza said: “Always using a nutrient-dense food like nuts, whole grains or fruit as our first ingredient and striving to make products that are low glycemic are among the standards that guide our product innovation.”

In May, the FDA notified Kind that it can use the term healthy on its packaging as it had been using it before, reversing its stance taken more than a year ago.
