ConAgra to invest $15.6m to upgrade popcorn plant

Andrew Bryan Published 23 January 2012

American packaged foods company ConAgra Foods plans to invest $15.6m to upgrade manufacturing facilities at its Orville Redenbacher's microwave popcorn plant in Rensselaer, Indiana, in the US.

The upgrade involves adding microwave popcorn packaging lines, redesigning the corn, slurry and salt systems, and remodeling the plant's quality assurance laboratory.

Plant Manager Ken Dobin said that Rensselaer's location provides a fantastic opportunity for ConAgra Foods due to its centralized location, quality workforce, state's current business climate and economic development record.

The plant upgrade is expected to create 24 new jobs by 2014.

The Indiana Economic Development Corporation has offered ConAgra up to $175,000 in conditional performance-based tax credits. The city of Rensselaer has also approved additional property tax abatement for the company.

ConAgra Foods manufactures products across categories such as meals, entrees, condiments, sides, snacks, and desserts. The company's major brands include Alexia, ACT II, Banquet, Blue Bonnet, Orville Redenbacher's, and Marie Callender's, among others.
